Featured Art: LEGO Prototype Boba Fett Wall Art
LEGO wall art is nothing new, and there is certainly no shortage of examples in existence. However, while most fall somewhere between funny and whimsical (and there’s nothing wrong with that of course), relatively few manage to qualify for fine art and in our opinion Dirk Froyen’s LEGO Prototype Boba Fett Wall Art nails it.
Perhaps what we appreciate most about this piece is the planning and ambition that was clearly required. The photo portion features an image of a white Boba Fett LEGO minifigure framed off to one side with Jeremy Bulloch’s signature as the central point of interest. The piece would not have been complete had Dirk not both planned the photo’s composition AND succeeded in meeting Mr. Bulloch. As a bonus, an actual white Boba Fett minifigure is nicely mounted on the frame’s matboard.
While this white Boba Fett wall art could easily be the centerpiece of most people’s rooms, it almost risks getting lost among Dirk’s incredible LEGO Star Wars collection. We say “almost” because it has Boba Fett’s personal touch which makes it truly one of a kind, something the rest of his collection can’t boast.
Artist Notes
“When I was a kid, I played with LEGO Technics and many years later I discovered LEGO again! It all started in May of 2012 when my girlfriend was on a business trip. I was bored, decided to go to a toy store and picked up the LEGO Star Wars Tie Fighter. From then on, I was hooked on LEGO Star Wars. I enjoyed it so much that I decided to start collecting all the LEGO Star Wars original trilogy sets that I could find. But after a while I ran out of space and made the decision to sell all of those sets in order to switch to the LEGO Star Wars Ultimate Collectors Series (UCS) instead. Again, only the original trilogy sets.
In my search for more LEGO Star Wars, I discovered the Dorling Kindersly books and started to collect them as well. With the LEGO Star Wars Character Encyclopedia: Updated and Expanded, came the white Boba Fett minifigure that I used in my fan art.
As a Sci-Fi/movie fan, I started to visit conventions where I found my inspiration for the fan art. At some booths you could buy framed movie scenes created with LEGO minifigures, and I knew I could do that too. It is simple and easy.
In November of 2015 my girlfriend and I traveled to London where we visited the MCM EXPO Comic Con. During this convention, Jeremy Bulloch was present at the Numskull booth. I bought myself an awesome Boba Fett jumper and had a brief conversation with Jeremy. He is a wonderful and funny man who was very kind to us, and he signed my picture of the LEGO white Boba Fett.
This wasn’t planned!
To create my style of fan art, the only thing you need is an IKEA Ribba frame (9″x9″), a 2×2 white LEGO brick, and some glue. Just put it all together, it is as simple as that.”
